Audi quattro vs AWD: What’s the Difference?

Audi quattro vs AWD: What’s the Difference?

Audi quattro is Audi’s name for all-wheel drive. AWD is the generic drivetrain category; quattro is the badge Audi uses for its own AWD systems.

The part that gets confusing is that not every quattro-equipped Audi uses the same hardware.

Why quattro can work differently from one Audi to another

Audi adapts its AWD system to the vehicle platform, engine layout and efficiency target. Over the years that has produced several distinct quattro designs.

quattro type How it works
Self-locking center differential A mechanical center differential connects the front and rear axles and can vary torque as grip changes
quattro with ultra technology Uses clutches to disconnect part of the rear driveline when AWD is not needed, then reconnects it when conditions call for more traction
Clutch-based quattro An electronically controlled multi-plate clutch sends torque to the rear axle as needed
Electric quattro Front and rear electric motors allow software-controlled torque distribution between the axles

Does quattro always have a 40:60 torque split?

No. A 40:60 front-to-rear baseline is associated with some Audi systems that use a self-locking center differential. It is not a rule for every quattro vehicle. Ultra, clutch-based and electric systems operate differently.

Is quattro better than other AWD systems?

Not automatically. Tires, vehicle weight, differential design, stability-control calibration and the specific AWD hardware all affect how a car behaves. The useful comparison is between two actual AWD systems, not “quattro versus AWD,” because quattro is AWD.

How to tell which quattro system a car has

Check the exact model year, engine and transmission against Audi’s technical specifications. The quattro badge alone does not tell you whether the vehicle uses a center differential, ultra technology, a multi-plate clutch or electric AWD.
