Which Audis Have “Real” quattro? Understanding the Different Systems

Audi does not officially sort its cars into “real quattro” and “fake quattro.” That is enthusiast shorthand. When people say “real quattro,” they usually mean the older-style system that keeps the front and rear axles mechanically connected through a center differential.

What enthusiasts usually mean by “real quattro”

Traditional quattro systems on many longitudinal-engine Audis use a center differential to split torque between the front and rear axles. Some versions use a self-locking differential with a rear-biased starting point and can redistribute torque as grip changes.

That is one important version of quattro, but it is not the only one Audi has used.

quattro is a family of AWD systems

Audi uses the quattro name for all of these approaches. Calling the newer systems “fake” may describe an enthusiast preference, but it is not Audi’s technical terminology.

If you specifically want the traditional system

Check the exact model year, engine and transmission rather than relying on a model-name list. Audi has changed AWD hardware between generations and powertrains, so two cars with the same model badge can use different quattro layouts.

For a used car, the official technical specification and drivetrain code are the safest way to confirm what is underneath it.
