How to Reset a Volkswagen Window One-Touch Function

If your Volkswagen power window still moves when you hold the switch but the one-touch auto-up or auto-down function has stopped working, the usual fix is to relearn the window position using the normal window switch. This often happens after the 12-volt battery has been disconnected or discharged.

The exact timing can vary slightly by model year, but Volkswagen owner instructions commonly use this sequence:

1. Switch the ignition on.
2. Close the doors and windows.
3. Pull the switch for the affected window upward and keep holding it for several seconds after the glass is fully closed.
4. Release the switch.
5. Pull it upward again and hold it briefly.
6. Test one-touch opening and closing.

If your owner’s manual gives a different sequence, follow the instructions for your exact model and year.

When a relearn is worth trying

Do not disconnect the battery just to reset the window

A battery disconnect is not a useful first step for a lost one-touch setting and can cause other vehicle settings to need relearning. If the battery was already disconnected and the window lost its automatic function afterward, reprogram the window instead.

If the window still will not reset

Mechanical noise, uneven movement, repeated stopping at the same point or no response from the switch can indicate a problem with the regulator, motor, switch, wiring, door module or pinch-protection system.

If the glass immediately reverses while closing, inspect the window channel for dirt, ice or another obstruction. Do not repeatedly force the window against resistance.
