On Volkswagen key fobs that support factory remote start, the x2 marking means you press the remote-start button twice as part of the start sequence. It is not the name of a separate security system, alarm function or trunk-release feature.
How the x2 button is used
Volkswagen’s current remote-start instructions for compatible models use a short two-step sequence:
- Press the lock button once.
- Press the remote-start button twice within the required time window.
The x2 marking is simply telling you that the second control needs two presses. The symbol and exact procedure can vary with key-fob generation, model year and market, so the owner’s manual for your car takes precedence.
Not every Volkswagen has this function
Remote start is equipment-dependent. Some Volkswagen models and trims do not support key-fob remote start at all, and a button sequence from another VW should not be assumed to work on your vehicle.

A note on remote-start use
Do not use remote start in an enclosed space such as a closed garage. Volkswagen also advises owners to follow the vehicle-specific manual and any local restrictions that apply to unattended idling or remote-start operation.
