The Acadia has the larger footprint
At just under 204 inches long, the Acadia is more than nine inches longer than the Highlander. It is also wider and has a considerably longer wheelbase.
That extra size can help inside the cabin, but it also matters in a garage or narrow parking space. The Highlander’s shorter and narrower body gives it the more compact footprint, although turning circle, visibility and cameras also affect how easy either SUV is to park.
The Acadia also has more cargo room
With all three rows in use, GMC publishes 23.0 cubic feet behind the Acadia’s third row compared with 16.0 cubic feet in the Highlander. With the third row folded, the figures are 57.3 versus 48.4 cubic feet. Maximum cargo volume is 97.5 versus 84.3 cubic feet.
The behind-third-row difference is especially relevant for families who regularly carry passengers and luggage at the same time.
Does the bigger Acadia seat more people?
Not necessarily. The Acadia seats up to eight. The Highlander commonly seats seven with second-row captain’s chairs and can seat up to eight in an eligible bench-seat configuration.
If third-row comfort matters, sit in the actual vehicles. Exterior size does not tell you floor height, seat shape or how easy it is to climb into the back.
Which one makes more sense?
The Acadia’s advantage is straightforward if you want more cargo room and a larger overall cabin. The Highlander’s smaller exterior may be easier to live with if garage clearance and urban parking are more important.
Towing also depends on the exact powertrain and equipment. GMC publishes up to 5,000 pounds for a properly equipped 2026 Acadia. Toyota publishes up to 5,000 pounds for the gas Highlander, while the Highlander Hybrid is rated lower. Verify the exact vehicle before towing.
Do not use these numbers for older generations
The Acadia changed significantly for the 2024 model year, so a previous-generation vehicle can be much smaller than the current one. For a used-car comparison, match both SUVs by model year before comparing dimensions or cargo figures.
