A modern Honda Ridgeline can handle some legal beach-driving routes, especially when the surface is firm and the truck is using its i-VTM4 AWD system with Sand mode. It is not a purpose-built beach or trail vehicle, though, and soft sand, tides, salt water, heavy loads and local access rules can quickly change the risk.
Why the Ridgeline can work on sand
Honda’s second-generation Ridgeline uses i-VTM4 AWD and Intelligent Traction Management. On the 2021 model, the driver can select Normal, Snow, Mud or Sand. Honda describes Sand mode for soft, sandy roads or off-road surfaces.
i-VTM4 can vary torque front-to-rear and between the two rear wheels, helping the truck use available traction. That is different from a traditional 4×4 with 4-High and 4-Low.
What Sand mode does not give you
- No low-range transfer case
- No guarantee against getting stuck
- No extra ground clearance
- No permission to drive where vehicles are prohibited
- No protection from salt-water corrosion or hidden beach hazards
Beach conditions matter more than the badge
A firm, designated vehicle beach is very different from deep, powdery sand. Wet sand near the water can hide drop-offs and exposes the vehicle to salt. Avoid surf, standing salt water and any route where vehicle access is restricted.
Before entering sand, check local rules, tide and weather conditions, and any recovery requirements. If the beach has specific tire-pressure or equipment rules, follow those requirements and Honda’s tire/load guidance.
If the Ridgeline starts to bog down
Honda’s owner guidance allows Mud or Sand modes to be used on those surfaces when freeing a stuck AWD vehicle and warns against continuous wheelspin. If forward progress stops, repeatedly spinning the tires can dig the truck deeper and add heat to drivetrain components.
After beach driving
Salt and sand can accelerate corrosion and wear. After authorized beach use, clean residue from the underbody, wheel areas and bed as appropriate, then inspect for packed debris or damage.
